Saijo Festival

The Saijo Matsuri, one of the largest festivals in Japan, is a continuing tradition of over 300 years. The festival is held every October. Giant wooden portable shrines called Danjiri (5 m tall, 700 kg) are carried by 20 men each, and more than 150 portable shrines including some outfitted with large taiko drums, are paraded through the city to the shrine. This lavish and gorgeous festival is like a picture from a storybook.
