Kotohiragu Shrine

Located on the side of Mt. Zozu (elevation 521m) is one of Japan's preeminent Shinto shrines. There are 785 steps in the front approach, and 1368 steps in total leading to the Izutama Shrine which is located near the top of the mountain. The hustle and bustle around the shops lining the road leading to the shrine are a fun part of the experience. The word Konpira is said to come from the Sanskrit “Khumbira” (a crocodile that was transformed into a Buddhist guardian deity).
